Join LWVSP Morning Book Club to discuss The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics by Michael Osterholm. We will meet at Highland Park Library (1974 Ford Parkway) on Wednesday, December 10 at 10 am. You are welcome to join even if you haven't read the book.

" In The Big One, founding director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy Michael T. Osterholm and Mark Olshaker examine past pandemics, highlighting the ways societies both succeeded and failed to address them; trace the Covid-19 pandemic and evaluate how it was handled; and look to the future, projecting what the next pandemics might look like and what must be done to mitigate them. Drawing on years of high-level research as well as cutting-edge analysis and an innovative hypothetical scenario threaded throughout each chapter, The Big One is a gripping, comprehensive, and urgent wake-up call. Because Covid-19 was just a taste of what’s to come. If we’re going to survive the next big pandemic, we need to be prepared."

Join LWVSP Morning Book Club to discuss When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How American Cracked Up in the Early 1990s by John Ganz. We will meet at Highland Park Library (1974 Ford Parkway) on Wednesday, February 11 at 10 am. You are welcome to join even if you haven't read the book.

"In When the Clock Broke, the acclaimed political writer John Ganz tells the story of America’s late-century discontents. Ranging from upheavals in Crown Heights and Los Angeles to the advent of David Duke and the heartland survivalists, the broadcasts of Rush Limbaugh, and the bitter disputes between neoconservatives and the “paleo-con” right, Ganz immerses us in a time when what Philip Roth called the “indigenous American berserk” took new and ever-wilder forms. In the 1992 campaign, Pat Buchanan's and Ross Perot’s insurgent populist bids upended the political establishment, all while Americans struggled through recession, alarm about racial and social change, the specter of a new power in Asia, and the end of Cold War–era political norms. Conspiracy theories surged, and intellectuals and activists strove to understand the “Middle American Radicals” whose alienation fueled new causes. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton appeared to forge a new, vital center, though it would not hold for long."

Join LWVSP Morning Book Club to discuss The Mission: The CIA in the 21st Century by Tim Weiner. We will meet at Highland Park Library (1974 Ford Parkway) on Wednesday, March 11 at 10 am. You are welcome to join even if you haven't read the book.

"At the turn of the century, the Central Intelligence Agency was in crisis. The end of the Cold War had robbed the agency of its mission. More than thirty overseas stations and bases had been shuttered, and scores that remained had been severely cut back. Many countries where surveillance was once deemed crucial went uncovered. Essential intelligence wasn’t being collected. At the dawn of the information age, the CIA’s officers and analysts worked with outmoded technology, struggling to distinguish the clear signals of significant facts from the cacophony of background noise."
